Billy Mawhiney was raised on a farm in a rural town in Missouri, where he developed a strong work ethic and a commitment to a supportive neighbor. As a proud citizen of the Wyandotte Nation, a tribe pivotal in the establishment of both Kansas City, Kansas, and Detroit, he carries a rich cultural heritage rooted in the Northern Iroquoian language family.

Billy began his career in afterschool programming while attending college at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Springfield, Missouri, where he dedicated eight years to developing impactful programs. He then transitioned to licensed school-age programs at the YMCA for four years before relocating to South Dakota to be closer to family and start his own. Eventually he returned to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire as the Director of Operations, where he has focused on advocacy at both the state and federal levels, expanding the organization’s capacity and now channeling that energy into enhancing afterschool programs.
